Back in May this year, I had the opportunity to set-up a community portrait house/storytelling hub in my hometown of Carrick-on-Suir, Co. Tipperary. The project was entitled #soundportraitsCarrick and was a follow on to a similar endevour I’d been trying on the streets of Cork City- entitled #soundportraits. Although the #soundportraits project was moderately successful, it allowed only very transient encounters with people. In contrast, the studio I set-up in Carrick-on-Suir allowed a proper base, where the mechanics of making portraits and interviews were simplified. The surroundings were comfortable, and relaxed and the location was right at the heart of the town. The convenience of the surroundings, relaxed atmosphere and simple logistics contributed to a more in-depth and satisfying portrait/story encounter. Due to some technical issues there are still five stories and portraits to be added to the project site. In the meantime here’s a little behind-the-scenes video I made of the process.
